Dig Deeper Presents: Joshie Jo Armstead (backed by the Brooklyn Rhythm Band)
Dig Deeper is honored to present soul legends Joshie Jo Armstead & Lonnie Lester – both backed by the Brooklyn Rhythm Band!

We have patiently been asking Joshie Jo Armstead to get back on stage for nearly six years straight since we first met her when she came to see Garland Green at rehearsal for Dig Deeper in early 2009. We were politely persistent, and she finally said “yes” – NYC will finally get a chance to hear this vocal powerhouse and prolific songwriter perform her classics live on NYE!

Whether you remember Joshie as one of the original Ikettes backing Ike & Tina Turner, or recognize her writing credits on songs like Ray Charles’s “I don’t need no doctor” and “Let’s go get stoned” or countless others she penned solo or with partners Ashford and Simpson – you should definitely know her for her solo material like “I feel an urge coming on”, “I’ve been turned on”, “Another reason why I love you” which have been dancefloor favorites with soul fans everywhere (including at Dig Deeper!) for many years.

Opening the night will be the unstoppable force of nature known as Lonnie Lester - if you missed him at our March 2014 Dig Deeper, now is your chance to be blown away. Since recording songs like “You can’t go”, “Ain’t that a shame”, and “So this is love” in Indiana in the 1960s, his records have become highly sought after by soul DJs worldwide for good reason – people love dancing to them. Lonnie rarely performs outside of Indiana these days – in fact, this will be his second show ever in NYC!

We have been waiting years to put this show together, and December 31 cannot get here soon enough! Rare NYC performances from legends of 1960s soul backed by one of the toughest soul bands in the land – that would be great on any normal night…but on New Year’s Eve? Celebrate somewhere else at your own peril!

As always, Dig Deeper DJs Mr. Robinson and DJ Honky will spin all-original soul and funk 45s before and after the live sets. Wear your dancing shoes – you will need them.
Lonnie Lester (backed by the Brooklyn Rhythm Band)
Though he was born in small town Missouri, Lonnie Lester and his family moved to Gary, Indiana when he was 9 – he would call the Hoosier State home for most of his life. That said, it seems he was rarely if ever home as he toured constantly, tirelessly for over 40 years on the chitlin ciruit and off with the likes of Aretha Franklin, Sam & Dave, Little Willie John, and the Drifters.

Early forays into music in the choir at his grandmother's church when he was 6, the high school chorus, and making spare change working in cover bands and winning talent contests during a short stint in Oakland, CA, in the Air Force, ultimately led Lonnie to a series of records he cut for the tiny Nu-Tone label "You can't go", "Ain't that a shame", and "So this is love".

Though impossible to know at the time, these records were destined to be cherished decades later by soul DJs around the world for the powerful response they always get on the dancefloor. Unfortunately, though his schedule continues to be packed with local dates around Indiana, he rarely plays far from home – this will be the second time Dig Deeper has managed to bring Lonnie Lester to the stage in NYC!
