Jason Bemis Lawrence
Jason Bemis Lawrence is a songwriter, drummer, and multi-instrumentalist based in NYC by way of Louisville, KY. He has recorded and performed in bands such as Dean & Britta, Jesse Marchant, Caithlin De Marrais and The Building.

Growing up in Louisville, Lawrence took to studying drums and guitar at a young age. He attended college in St. Louis, where he focused his attention on drums and joined the Dischord-inspired bands Let Sleepers Lie and Speak Low. He returned to Louisville in the early 2000s and played in bands like Fire the Saddle and the Middle Men, while teaching drum lessons and quietly honing his songwriting.

In 2005, Lawrence moved to NYC to attend the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, where he met Anthony LaMarca (The War on Drugs). Jason began playing drums in Lamarca’s new project, The Building, which led to additional opportunities playing with Dean & Britta, Jesse Marchant, and Heather Woods Broderick, among others.

The constant gigging with talented and accomplished artists—in NYC and around the world—inspired Lawrence to bring his own songwriting into the light, and in 2013 Lawrence recorded a few original songs with producer Josh Kaufman. The sessions were fruitful and instructive, and Lawrence felt inspired to write and tour more before finishing his debut full length album.

In 2016, The Building recorded a live performance at Peppermint Studios in LaMarca’s hometown of Youngstown, OH, and Lawrence knew he had found the place where he would make his album. Over the course of six days in March and July of 2017, Lawrence and LaMarca recorded eleven songs. The friends’ extensive experience performing together allowed them to create a natural, full-band sound while preserving the quiet intimacy of Jason’s lyrics and vocals. Guest appearances by Heather Woods Broderick and Chris Hoffman, as well as the expert mixing and mastering of longtime collaborator D. James Goodwin were the finishing touches.

Another Hotel Hallway was released this fall, on September 7. The album revolves around themes of isolation, as well as mortality and time. Ideas for many of the tracks were conceived while on tour across the country, during bouts of feeling like a perpetual guest or stranger. “It can be disquieting,” Lawrence says, “but distance can provide the opportunity to reflect on values and beliefs, as well as how we handle change and adapt.”
