A "...samba-lanche of music, dance, and color," the group is part of a bigger, global arts project, the Paris and Salvador-based Batala, which has bands in over 25 cities around the world. Batala NYC plays the rhythms of the northeast Brazilian state of Bahia, with roots in West African rhythms. The ensemble takes all women regardless of musical ability and teaches them to drum and dance. BatalaNYC has performed in over 100 festivals, parades, events, shows, and parties, including being the opening drummers for the Rolling Stones 50th Anniversary tour in 2012. The NYC Chapter was started in 2012 by artistic director Stacy Kovacs, and has grown to 85 women strong.
