Butterboy with Jo, Aparna and Maeve
Three chuckle monsters descend on Littlefield every Monday at 8pm, clutching with them a horde of the freshest, silver-tongued comics and phone sex operators this city has to offer. Legends in their own right, these three friends, Aparna Nancherla, Maeve Higgins and Jo Firestone combine forces to host the funniest and best show in Gowanus! Accompanied by the musical stylings of DJ Donwill and the sensual silence of a rotating Idris Elba impersonator, you won't want to miss it. Plus, find out which parts of this blurb are bold, unapologetic lies!
Jo Firestone is a comedian whose work can be seen on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Chris Gethard Show, and heard on WFMU and Earwolf. She was recently named a New Face at the 2016 Just for Laughs Festival, and her Comedy Central half hour comes out this fall. If you like puns, check out her board game, Punderdome: A Card Game for Pun Lovers. If you don't like puns, don't worry about it. You can also see Jo doing stand-up in different basements around the city.
Aparna Nancherla is a comedian of the stand-up variety, but can often be seen sitting. Last year, she released her debut album, Just Putting It Out There, on Tig Notaro’s new label, Bentzen Ball Records and recorded a Comedy Central half hour special. This year, she was named one of “The 50 Funniest People Right Now” by Rolling Stone. Currently, you can catch her on the latest seasons of Bojack Horseman, Master of None and Love, all on Netflix, as well as on HBO's Crashing. She's also written for Late Night with Seth Meyers (NBC) and Totally Biased (FX). Aparna will next appear on the upcoming Comedy Central show, Corporate.
Maeve Higgins is the host of the hit podcast Maeve In America: Immigration IRL. She has performed all over the world, including in her native Ireland, Edinburgh, Melbourne and, most recently, Erbil. Now based in New York, she's made a name for herself there too. In a good way! She co-hosts Neil deGrasse Tyson's StarTalk on National Geographic and has appeared in Comedy Central's Inside Amy Schumer. Her work has been published in The New York Times and The Irish Times, and she is writing a book of essays for Penguin due for publication later this year.
Matteo Lane is a New York-based comedian, originally from Chicago. Before starting stand up, Matteo lived in Italy as an oil painter and Opera singer. After realizing that he can’t become Maria Callas, Matteo began telling jokes to strangers in dark rooms. Matteo has performed in the TBS Just for Laughs Festival, has been heard on SiriusXM and “Keith and the Girl,” and co-hosts a monthly variety show at the Creek and the Cave.
Ramon Rivas II
Ramon Rivas II is a stand up comedian and eminent Latino from Cleveland, OH. Over the past 6 years he has built a name for himself as one of the hardest working comics in Midwest, curating chucklefck.com in addition to performing. His lovable stage presence blends with stonery vibes for a very authentic performance.
SEATON SMITH made his television debut as ‘Motif’ on the Fox show MULANEY. He recently appeared in a fun role for the most recent season of GIRLS. Chortle.com says SEATON “offers a mesmerizing, livewire performance, full of joy and amazing comic energy”. Originally from Washington D.C., SEATON performs stand up regularly at all of the major comedy clubs in NYC. Additionally, he has headlined shows across the country and performed at numerous colleges. SEATON was featured in the 2014 Melbourne International Comedy Festival and Just For Laughs Festival 2014 in Montreal, and has appeared on THE NIGHLY SHOW WITH LARRY WILMORE and LATE NIGHT WITH SETH MEYERS.
Shalewa Sharpe got her start in Atlanta but now resides in Brooklyn. She has joked on extremely popular live shows (Night Train with Wyatt Cenac, Comedy Night at The Knitting Factory) and at festivals (Brooklyn Comedy Festival, Atlanta’s Red Clay Comedy Festival). She co-produces and hosts “Thug Passion Presents,” a lively table read and celebration of classic black movies. Her debut album, “Stay Eating Cookies,” on Rotknee Presents Records came out this year.
Kate Willett has been featured on Comedy Central’s “This Is Not Happening,” Viceland’s “Flophouse” and is a regular opener for Margaret Cho who she’s toured with nationally and internationally. You might have seen her on Fusion TV or heard her on the Risk! podcast with Kevin Allison. She’s was named a top “Artist to Watch in 2016” by SF Weekly, has opened for comedians like Kyle Kinane, Jen Kirkman, Anthony Jeselnik, Dana Gould, Jackie Kashian, Myq Kaplan, and Michael Che. She’s appeared in the 2015 Just for Laughs Montreal Comedy Festival, Limestone Comedy Festival, and San Francisco Sketchfest (3 years in a row). She’s a regular feature at comedy clubs all over the country and a favorite of audience members, flannel clad skateboarders, and all of her twenty-three roommates.
Loyiso Madinga may be small in stature but he’s definitely not short on jokes. This rural raised boy has quickly risen to being a certified international comic. Having started in 2012 when spent a week at the Teatro where he shared the stage with international acts like Tom Segura Loyiso’s career was on the fast track. Since then, he quickly became a regular on David Kau’s Blacks Only line up. He then travelled the country on Trevor Noah’s Nationwild tour and represented SA at the Montreux Comedy Festival, Switzerland, and Busan Comedy Festival, Korea. His debut one man show, Born Free-ish, was a four night, sold out success.
And he’s as comfortable on screen as he is on stage. Loyiso has written and performed on the two-time Emmy finalist satire show, Late Nite News with Loyiso Gola and also written and performed on the hit sketch show, Bantu Hour. All of this in just five years and he’s just beginning. From a small village in the Eastern Cape to world stages, his 1.65m of height means Loyiso Madinga is tall on the inside.
