SIEMBRA Brooklyn Benefit for Tropical Trees
SIEMBRA Brooklyn Benefit for Tropical Trees
Jose Conde has been writing nature inspired songs for over two decades releasing many of these songs to some worldwide acclaim in his Cuban dance band Ola Fresca and also as a solo artist. What most people do not know is that since 2006 Conde has quietly conducted a private reforestation project on a small farm he owns in the central Pacific highlands of Costa Rica. “I have personally affected land and nature and seen the impact of a bald field of rough dry cattle grass turned into a diverse and living thriving forest, and it is the best feeling in the world”.

For his 50th birthday, the Brooklyn based musician, producer, multi instrumentalist and singer Conde has teamed up with other musicians in partnering with Costa Rica non profit Community Carbon Trees and organized a mini music festival and benefit for trees in Brooklyn that will be broadcast and accept donations live worldwide.

The event is called SIEMBRA which means “to plant” in Spanish, and will be held on Nov 2nd, (on Conde’s B day) a couple of blocks away from his Brooklyn home and studio at LittleField. Cuban Rumba percussionist and Poet formerly of Yoruba Andabo will christen the event. Jennifer Leigh Smith who lives in Costa Rica and runs the non profit COMMUNITY CARBON TREES, which raises money to plant indigenous hard woods on local farms and pays local workers in Costa Rica, will talk about the project and how the money raised will be used. The event features LOCOBEACH, a cumbia pop, Latin disco, psychedelic/spaghetti western supergroup that brings together former members of prominent groups like Si Se, Amigos Invisibles, and Chicha Libre. Jose Conde unveils his new ECELCTRIC project which as the name implies is at once eclectic and electric and features a rhythmic stew of songs, experiments, and fun dance inspiring digressions from the normal some of which are characteristically nature inspired. Songstress GEMINELLE Rollins will perform a set of her loop based soulful r n b, rap pop. SWEETCANE will perform a set of reggae, samba, Haitian tinged original songs from his upcoming album. Former Ailey dancer and choreographer Deirdre Lovell will perform a dance piece. There will be other surprise performers and collaborators and friends of Conde’s and this might get interesting as Conde has performed with a whose who of Latin musicians through 2 decades in NYC. Writer, tastemaker, vinyl label owner and DJ Pablo Yglesias aka DJ BONGOHEAD will be spinning live vinyl.

Jose Conde’s band OLA FRESCA was recipient of 2008 Best Latin Album Independent Music Award. His music has been featured in numerous Putumayo, Rough Guide, and World Circuit compilations and he has performed in festivals and venues across the US, in Latin America and the Caribbean.
