Treehouse presents a unique showcase for new Brooklyn-based electronic music, part of the 2010 Unsound Festival. One of our biggest nights yet featuring Morgan Geist (DJ), Neurotic Drum Band (drums'n'fx), and Blondes (live). Climb up and get down —now on Thursdays!
This NJ native was initially inspired by England's take on the sound of Detroit, but eventually Morgan Geist tracked techno back to its Motor City innovators. When he began listening to music, however, it was the sound of early 80s synth heroes like Devo, Severed Heads and New Order alongside early hip hop, jazz and 60s Hindi film soundtracks. Geist continues to run Environ today. A highly-regarded remixer and producer both solo and as half of Metro Area, Geist has lent his touch to a wide range of artists including Hugh Masekela, Telex, Erlend Oye and The Rapture.
In the worlds of techno and house, John Selway and Elliot Taub, aka Neurotic Drum Band, need little introduction. Taub, who also goes by alias Ulysses, has been providing the juiciest techno jams since '91 to every corner of the globe from his hometown NYC to Hong Kong. The man behind NYC's first electro parties, the Regressive Technologies series, continues to work the 1s and 2s while maintaining his own label, Scatalogics. Selway is mostly known for his endless collaborations and his significant trope of solo material. From 90s techno duo Disintegrator to the electrofunk outfit Synapse, Selway has been all over the place for about 20 years. He also has his own label, CSM, which specializes in minimal techno cuts.
Zach Steinman and Sam Haar started Blondes during a trip to Berlin. They're currently working on an EP. The duo's "Spanish Fly" begins with a hypnotic blend of cut-up vocal samples and pulsating bass, and it folds in handclaps, plinky keyboards, and synth stabs, building to a cacophony before being stripping things back down.
